Background
In 2003 an open spaces steering group was established to bring together several organisations working in the Waterloo area and interested in open space improvement, management and maintenance. Members of the steering group were:
- The Waterloo Green Trust (WGT) (Chair)
- Waterloo Community Regeneration Trust (WCRT)
- Waterloo Community Development Group (WCDG)
- Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST)
- Putting Down Roots (PDR)
- Roots and Shoots (RS)
The group received regeneration funding from the Waterloo Community
Regeneration Trust (WRCT) to conduct an audit of open spaces
in Waterloo.
The audit looked at 111 open spaces of all shapes and purposes and
identified 23 potential regeneration projects, and led to the report
Space for All.
In May 2004 the steering group revised its terms of reference and reconstituted itself as a new partnership to manage the strategic progression of the report's recommendations.
In July 2004 the group obtained additional WCRT funding to develop an Open Spaces Strategic Development Plan and in January 2005 two further reports were produced:
- Space for All: A Model for Strategic Management & Planning
- Space for All: A Model for Maintenance
In 2005 the steering group was renamed the Waterloo Open Space Partnership (WOSP). WOSP is expanding beyond its original constituents to include:
- London Borough of Lambeth
- London Borough of Southwark
- Coin Street Community Builders
- South Bank Employers Group
- Waterloo Business Quarter Alliance
WOSP is currently working on strengthening partnerships between interested stakeholders on specific open spaces, exploring funding for schemes and developing models for maintenance.
